ABSTRACT

In the era of SDGs, useful plants which provide valuable industrial outputs and at the same time pose less impact on the environment should be explored. Hemp seems one of the most relevant gluten-free crop plants to meet such requirements. Its high nutritional value is comparable to soy. Moreover, almost the whole body of the hemp plant has a wide array of utility: industrial production of food, fiber, and construction materials. In view of environmental sustainability, hemp requires less pesticides or water in cultivation compared to cotton, a representative fiber plant. This short review investigates hemp's sustainability as a plant as well as its utility value as a highly nutritional material in the food industry. Recent application research of hemp protein in food processing includes plant milk, emulsifiers, fortification of gluten-free bread, plant-based meat production, as well as membrane formation. These studies have revealed distinctive properties of hemp protein, especially in relation to disulfide (S-S)/sulfhydryl (-SH)-mediated interactions with protein from other sources. While its cultivation area and industrial use were limited for a while over confusion with marijuana, the market for industrial hemp is growing rapidly because it has been highly reevaluated in multiple areas of industry. Conclusively, with its sustainability as a plant as well as its distinctive useful property of the seed protein, hemp has promising value in the development of new foods.

ABSTRACT

To control the COVID-19 pandemic, antivirals that specifically target the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) are urgently required. The 3-chymotrypsin-like protease (3CLpro) is a promising drug target since it functions as a catalytic dyad in hydrolyzing polyprotein during the viral life cycle. Bioactive peptides, especially food-derived peptides, have a variety of functional activities, including antiviral activity, and also have a potential therapeutic effect against COVID-19. In this study, the hemp seed trypsinized peptidome was subjected to computer-aided screening against the 3CLpro of SARS-CoV-2. Using predictive trypsinized products of the five major proteins in hemp seed (i.e., edestin 1, edestin 2, edestin 3, albumin, and vicilin), the putative hydrolyzed peptidome was established and used as the input dataset. To select the Cannabis sativa antiviral peptides (csAVPs), a predictive bioinformatic analysis was performed by three webserver screening programs: iAMPpred, AVPpred, and Meta-iAVP. The amino acid composition profile comparison was performed by COPid to screen for the non-toxic and non-allergenic candidates, ToxinPred and AllerTOP and AllergenFP, respectively. GalaxyPepDock and HPEPDOCK were employed to perform the molecular docking of all selected csAVPs to the 3CLpro of SARS-CoV-2. Only the top docking-scored candidate (csAVP4) was further analyzed by molecular dynamics simulation for 150 nanoseconds. Molecular docking and molecular dynamics revealed the potential ability and stability of csAVP4 to inhibit the 3CLpro catalytic domain with hydrogen bond formation in domain 2 with short bonding distances. In addition, these top ten candidate bioactive peptides contained hydrophilic amino acid residues and exhibited a positive net charge. We hope that our results may guide the future development of alternative therapeutics against COVID-19.

[...]in Oregon and Florida, consumers can purchase CBD in their coffee.2 Following declassification of hemp as a Schedule I drug, a recent Gallup poll found that one in seven Americans use hemp-derived CBD products (although CBD derived from marijuana is still illegal under federal law and will not be addressed here). "3 CBD products are available at a variety of mainstream retailers including CVS, Walgreens, GNC, Kroger, Ulta Beauty, Abercrombie & Fitch, and American Eagle Outfitters.4 Industry research firms estimate that by 2024, CBD sales will exceed twenty billion dollars in the United States.5 Another study projects a twenty-five percent compound annual growth rate in the CBD edible market between 2020 and 2027.6 Many consumers rely on CBD to treat anxiety, pain, and insomnia.7 Other common usages include over-the-counter treatment for depression, muscle contractions, skin conditions, and digestive concerns.8 A third of pet owners have purchased CBD-infused treats, food, or other items for their cats and dogs, and purchases of CBD pet products are rapidly increasing as pet owners begin to return to the office following the nationwide lifting of COVID-19 restrictions.9 Considering this clear market demand and the likelihood that states will continue to ease restrictions on sale of CBD and other hemp-derived related products, franchisors may find entering the CBD market an irresistible opportunity-either through creating a new franchised system that primarily sells CBD products or by adding them as a new or additional product line in an existing system. "25 Guy believed a cannabis product with low levels of THC but high levels of CBD would be appealing for these users.26 By the late 1990s, several Northern California cannabis growers were cultivating high CBD/low THC strains and distributing both the seeds and their research about its effects at marijuana shops and fairs on the West Coast.27 In 2010, a group of medical marijuana researchers and cannabis growers founded Project CBD, a nonprofit corporation with the goal of collecting and promoting medical research regarding the benefits of CBD.28 In August 2013, CNN aired Dr. Sanjay Gupta's documentary Weed, which contained a segment describing the successful use of a CBD oil developed by the Stanley Brothers, called "Charlotte's Web," to reduce seizures in fiveyear old Charlotte Figi.29 After the segment, the wait list for the oil grew to 15,000 people, families moved to Colorado with the hope of using the oil, and the Food and Drug Administration fast-tracked trials of GW Pharmaceutical's CBD-based medication, Epidiolex.30 Popular culture acceptance and demand for CBD has continued to increase in the last decade.

ABSTRACT

Cannabis sativa (Can nabis=hemp) contains cannabinoid-derived main components. Cannabinoids exert biological effects by stimulating cannabinoid receptors distributed throughout the body. Cannabis products affect various systems in the body such as the cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous and immune systems. They show analgesic, antiemetic, anxiolytic, antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antihypertensive, antitussive and cardioprotective effects. COVID-19 affects different organ systems in the body and causes symptoms depending on the mutation, such as dry cough, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite and sense of smell. In this article, effectiveness of C. sativa and its components on COVID-19 have been evaluated, based on the fact that components or the extracts can affect the whole body due to cannabinoid receptors. Although cannabis and its components have potential beneficial effects for the entry of COVID-19 through the receptors into the body and the symptoms, further studies are needed for their safe use. Appropriate formulation and administration routes should be determined to eliminate the side effects and risk of addiction.

ABSTRACT

The consumption of illicit drugs represents a global social and economic problem. Using suitable analytical methods, monitoring, and detection of different illegal drugs residues and their metabolites in wastewater samples can help combat this problem. Our article defines a method to develop, validate, and practically applicate a rapid and robust analytical process for the evaluation of six naturally occurring cannabinoids (CBG, CBD, CBDV, CBN, THC, THCV), two cannabinoids in acidic form (CBDA, THCA-A), and the major cannabis-related human metabolite (THC-COOH). After SPE offline enrichment, we used a UPLC–ESI-MS/MS system, which permitted the determination of several by-products. Studied matrices were samples of different origins: (i) effluent water from a wastewater treatment plant in the Porto urban area;(ii) environmental water from Febros River, the last left-bank tributary of the Douro River. The multi-residue approach was substantiated and successfully employed to analyze the water samples collected in the above locations. The rapid and precise quantification of nine different cannabinoids in different water samples occurred within nine minutes at the ng L−1 level. The appearance of dozens of ng L−1 of some cannabis secondary metabolites, such as CBD, CBDA, CBN, THCA-A, indicates this plant species’ widespread usage among the general population in the considered area.

ABSTRACT

Industrial hemp is characterized by a huge amount of by-products, such as inflorescences, that may represent high-quality sources of biomolecules with pharmaceutical interest. In the present study, we have evaluated the phytochemical profile, including terpene and terpenophenolic compounds, of the essential oils (EOs) of Futura 75, Carmagnola selezionata and Eletta campana hemp varieties. The EOs were also tested for antifungal properties toward Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Trichophyton rubrum, Arthroderma crocatum, Arthroderma quadrifidum, Arthroderma gypseum, Arthroderma curreyi, and Arthroderma insingulare. In parallel, we investigated the inhibitory effects of the EOs against tyrosinase, and the production of prostaglandin E2 in isolated mouse skin exposed to hydrogen peroxide. In human H1299 lung adenocarcinoma cells, we also evaluated the influence of the EOs on the gene expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) and transmembrane protease serine 2 (TMPRSS2), which are involved in SARS-CoV-2 entry in human host. E-caryophyllene and α-pinene were the prominent terpenes in the EOs, whereas the cannabidiolic acid was the terpenophenol present at higher concentration. The EOs inhibited the growth of all tested dermatophytes species. In isolated skin specimens, EOs prevented the hydrogen-peroxide-induced synthesis of prostaglandin E2, consistent with the intrinsic antityrosinase activity. Finally, in H1299 cells, all tested EOs reduced the gene expression of ACE-2 and TMPRSS2, as well. Therefore, the present findings highlight the rationale for the use of the present EOs against infectious diseases.
